My interior regrets

my interior design regrets including buying an uncomfortable sofa, cheap carpets and decorating too quickly after moving into our home

We've all been there. Got too excited and rushed into buying something you're not so keen on a few months down the line. Its fine if that thing is easily replaceable like a few flamingo-adorned cushions, but unfortunately that's not quite the case in my house. There's a couple of things I'm 'stuck' with at the moment (mainly because, like I've said before, I don't want to spend too much money knowing we're not going to be in this house for much longer). So I thought I'd share some of my interior regrets, and what I'd do differently if I had my time in this house over again.

Sofas
They're such a huge part of your lounge decor aren't they - usually the rest of the room is styled around them, and they can really 'make or break' a space. Which is why I'm so annoyed with myself for choosing these sofas. When we moved in four years ago we'd ploughed almost every penny we had into getting the deposit together, and as a result had very little leftover for furniture. When you team that with 'panic buying' as we had nothing to sit on - these sofas are what you are left with. There's nothing wrong with them as such, they're just not what I would choose today, aren't terribly comfortable, and you can't remove the seat pads - a recipe for disaster with a messy baby and puppy. I've already decided they won't be coming with us to another house. I am so glad I went with a lighter colour though - which I was warned against - as they compliment this small room so much more than a darker colour would.

Carpet
When we moved in we were faced with bright pink and red carpets in two of the bedrooms, which absolutely HAD to go. However, again, with funds being tight I simply chose something that matched what was already on the stairs and landing, instead of replacing the lot. Result - we're left with a carpet throughout the entire upstairs that I wouldn't have chosen. If I had my time again I'd stick it out with the awful carpets for a bit longer, save up and replace the lot with something less threadbare and more soft underfoot.

Don't buy in a rush
I've heard you should live in a house six months before making any major decorating decisions, and I'll definitely be adopting this thought process should we ever move on, as to be honest, this is the main one for me.

I think I was just so excited to finally have our own place I jumped straight into decorating every single room at once, not giving myself time to settle in and gather my ideas. I’m still slowly replacing bits I bought in a rush which now either don’t go with the rest of the room or I no longer like. My bargain vintage bureau - an eBay find for under a tenner - recently replaced some cheap furniture in my conservatory. I would definitely recommend trying your hand at upcycling vintage finds as a cheaper way of replacing furniture you're no longer in love with.

Is there any interior decisions you've made that you're currently regretting?

Thanks for reading,

  1. Thank you for sharing the post and advice. What I'm regretting is a too big family photo frame, it's about 1 x 1,2 m. Now I prefer many photos with smaller frame.

    1. Thanks for reading! Ah yes I know the sort! At least that’s something that can be replaced with not too much hassle, much easier than sofas anyway!
