Transforming an unused conservatory into a stylish sun room

Conservatories are funny things aren’t they? An absolute life-saver in terms of space, but often too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. Add a baby and a messy dog into the mix and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a bug-infested dumping ground. So I decided it was high time ours needed a bit of a revamp to turn it into somewhere we could actually use, instead of somewhere to chuck all the toys and shut the doors at the end of the day.

Firstly I had a deep clean in here, something which we aim to do every springtime, but definitely needs doing more regularly, particularly during warm weather when every bug in the local area seems to make its way in here to die. I steam cleaned the floor, touched up the paintwork and washed the windows, which already made a huge difference. I also took the opportunity to have a clear-out of all the ‘junk’ that seems to accumulate out there – it’s a small room so I had to be brutal with getting rid of stuff. I cleared some space in our coat cupboard by the front door for things we won’t need again until Autumn, like blankets and covers for the pram, and some bits she’s outgrown went up into the loft.

Clever thinking was definitely needed when approaching much-needed toy storage - I knew I wanted something that was stylish but practical – in keeping with the rest of the house whilst big enough to hold everything that currently lived out there (and there was a LOT). I also felt like I wanted to create a less formal seating space than the table and chairs, so decided to combine the two with a blanket box. Somewhere that could hide a multitude of sins, but easily styled into a comfortable seat. It also nicely covers up the ugliest heater ever, but is compact enough to move around the room should we wish. This one is from The Cotswold Company, and is so spacious – a much more stylish solution to storage than a bog-standard toy box may be.

I did this with a faux fur cushion and herringbone cushion, plus a throw (perfect for Autumn/Winter too) which I think have created a cosy, relaxed feel to the lost space in the corner.

Next I decided this space needed a rug. Seeing as this is the only way out into the garden, messy little paws/feet drag muck into here constantly, so I went for sturdy woven one. I love how its softened the floor nicely, and has again made this space feel instantly more cosy and welcoming. You could also move it onto the patio to use as an outdoor rug during the summer months too, which I’ve already done a couple of times.

Finally I re-painted the dining table chairs (I upcycled them along with the table a couple of years ago – you can read my DIY tutorial here) to give them a new lease of life. I’m so happy with my mini-revamp, and can’t wait to make more use of this space over the summer, and hopefully throughout the colder months too.

What do you think about my mini-makeover? How do you use your conservatory?

  2. I don't have a conservatory but always think that it would be good to have a sun room particularly in spring & autumn. I love all the texture you've added to the room

  3. Same here, no conservatory but do feel that the ones I have occasionally visited are underused and cramped with unnecessary stuff. Yours looks perfect though, great styling!

  5. What a lovely space. I'd love a conservatory but like you I'd probably just fill it with kids stuff and junk. Keeping clutter at bay is a full time job in its own right! Yours looks lovely now you've transformed it. I hope you are able to enjoy the space now!
