DIY Scaffold Shelves using pine planks

I previously attempted this project as part of my downstairs loo makeover last year, and was so pleased with the outcome I've decided to have another go to fill an awkward corner in my kitchen. Because a boiler and a smoke alarm are never going to be insta-worthy are they?! So in an attempt distract from them, I decided I wanted to fill this space with some beautiful scaffold-style kitchen shelves. However, with no timber yard local to me, and no budget for some of the pricier Etsy made-to-measure beauties, I've turned to pine planks and some wood stain. And hey presto: two pretty kitchen shelves which cost me just £28 in total. Can't go wrong right?!

Here's exactly how I did it, in what is probably the shortest DIY tutorial I've ever written (seriously there's about three steps!)

I've also put together a video tutorial for this which you can watch here, or keep scrolling for the step-by-step instructions...

You will need:
Pine shelves - You could probably pick up a piece of pine and cut it yourself for cheaper, but to save time I bought two pine shelves from B&Q, which cost just £6 each
Satin wood varnish - I already had some of this leftover from another project, however originally picked it up from B&Q for £8. This is in the Oak shade, and although its only 0.25l I've stained four shelves with this now, and have still got some left for another project
Brackets - These are from IKEA and cost £4 each
Drill
Screws
Rawlplugs for putting the screws into the wall
Spirit level
Pencil

Total spent: £28

You can buy shelves like this in most hardware stores, these B&Q ones are really good quality for the price and come in lots of different sizes - I went for the 30cm size which is the perfect fit for this little corner. You don't need to treat the wood at all first, just paint on the wood stain and leave to dry. I gave each side two coats. Be careful how to stand the shelves as they're drying as any drips will show up really dark in colour.

Once its all dry you can put them up using brackets (you'll need screws and rawlplugs for this) - there's loads of really beautiful industrial style brackets available on places like Etsy, which will make the shelves look even more authentic, however budget prevails so I've gone for some classic IKEA ones which are a steal at £4 each.

Now for the fun bit: styling! I've used some jars from The Range to store some of my baking ingredients, and popped some (real and artificial) plants too add some colour. My favourite Emma Bridgewater jug and Laura Ashley toast rack have made an appearance too. All these things were items I already owned - see I told you this was done on a serious budget!

What do you think? A complete bargain and easy way to distract from an ugly corner right?!
