How to use flooring to transform any room*

*This is a sponsored post*

The best flooring types for different rooms in your home. From wood in the living room and wool carpets in the bedroom to vinyl in the bathroom, runners in the hallway to layering with rugs in the children's bedroom.

When decorating a room my mind usually goes straight to the wall paint, soft furnishings and furniture, totally overlooking the difference a good floor can make to the final look of a room. You can have the most beautiful room in the world and it'll always be let down by a grubby thinning carpet. Replacing the flooring is a big decision though, and one you don't want to get wrong - but where to start? And which type of flooring is best suited to each room? Keep scrolling for my mini guide to each room in the house, and what flooring works best where.

Bedroom - Keep it cosy with wool

As much as I love the beautiful scandi look of whitewashed floorboards in a bedroom, I don't think anything can compare to climbing out of bed on a freezing January morning and sinking your feet into a cosy carpet. A beautiful wool flooring will transform the look of any bedroom, and create a warm sanctuary to retreat away from it all at the end of the day. Consider choosing a neutral coloured carpet to create a light, airy look that will stand the test of time, even when you want to redecorate.

Hallway - Make a statement with a runner of dreams

Your hallway can be more than just kicked-off shoes and junk mail! It should be an accurate reflection of the rest of your home - a visitor stepping foot in your front door should get a little insight into what the other rooms have to offer just from your hallway. Moroccan-inspired interiors are still huge news at the moment, so why not add a little touch with a cosy runner literally paving the way into the rest of your home. A full carpet might be a bit much in a hallway, especially with dog paws and dirty little wellies, but add a runner and you've got all the cosiness of a carpet to welcome you home after a long day, with a touch of effortless style too.

Bathroom - Fake it with a vinyl

If, like me, the ceramic tiles of dreams are still a long way off, laying a vinyl is a really great alternative as its cheaper, and easier to lay yourself. You can also get some amazing vinyls in a tile or wood effect, meaning you don't need to shell out to get the look you want.

Kids room - Layer with Rugs

Rugs is one of the best ways to quickly transform a room without changing the flooring - so if you're stuck with something less-than-perfect under your feet, layer up with rugs. With a crayon-mad toddler living in my home, I'd be mad to replace the rather boring carpet we inherited from the previous owners, so a faux-fur rug it is in her room (obviously taken up during play time though!). Get a couple of cheaper rugs to layer up, and you can cover up your precious carpet until those pesky little ones are out of that adorable smashing-custard-creams-into-everything phase.

Living room - Go traditional with wood

I'm a huge fan of a beautiful wood floor in a living room, and while we currently have laminate in ours, one day I dream of having gorgeous floorboards to create a traditional look. So versatile, wood literally goes with almost all decor choices, so is a great choice if you're the type of person that likes to change up their look every so often.

Choose dark wood to create a statement piece you can style the rest of your room around, or go for light and bright to adopt the neutral look, and open up a small space.
