Bathroom updates for every budget (from just £50!)

Last month, I put together one of these posts for updating a kitchen, and it got such a fab response I've decided to turn it into a new series called '£50 room revamps', and will be looking into some budget updates for every room in the house. This month I've chosen another of those love/hate rooms - the bathroom.

If you're living with an outdated bathroom, it can feel like there's not much you can do without ripping it all out and starting again. But I"m here to tell you there's lots of changes you can make to ensure your bathroom feels a little more to-your-taste, even if you've only got a few pound spare!

Please note: I have priced up these items according to my tiny 2m x 2m bathroom, so bear that in mind if you're blessed with a bigger one! I've also not included labour costs in any of these items, as they can vary greatly according to where you are in the country.

Bathroom budget: £50

You might feel that a mere £50 isn't going to go anywhere with updating a bathroom you hate, however I promise these simple changes will make you feel a lot better about whats supposed to be the most relaxing room in your home. These are the exact changes I've made to my outdated bathroom.

It might sound obvious, but start with a good old-fashioned deep clean. Leaving the sink sparking and the shower head squeaky clean will always be a vast improvement. If you've got a lot of limescale on your taps then try soaking them in vinegar for a couple of hours. While you're at it, have a declutter of all your products - are you really ever going to use all those body creams Aunt Joan got you for Christmas 2016? Clearing some space and ensuring your storage isn't over-cluttered will also have a big impact on how big the room looks. 

Next up, look at how you're storing everything. Bathrooms tend to come with a lot of 'stuff', and storing all those bottles on the side of the bath is never going to give you a luxury spa-feel to your daily soak. I use some sturdy storage baskets and pretty glass jars (all from IKEA) to store all our products, meaning any of the things that are on show are styled nicely. 

Blessed with some less-than perfect tiles? I suggested this in the kitchen updates post, but why not paint them? You can pick up tile paint quite cheaply (I recently painted my kitchen tiles using £7.99 paint from Aldi), and it'll make such a huge difference to the way the room looks overall. Treating yourself to a pretty bath mat will also add a touch of luxury. 

Finally, what about popping some greenery here and there? Real flowers not only look great, but literally purify the air, so its a win-win isn't it?! Moisture-loving peace lilies and aloes are perfect for bathrooms. 

Bathroom budget: £250

If you've got a little more money to play with you can think about replacing some of your fixtures and fittings. A new sink will instantly refresh your space, and why not add a vanity underneath it? Not only will it inject some style, but it'll also be invaluable for hidden storage. Replacing your flooring with a stylish tile-effect vinyl is another really cost-effective option - fit it yourself to save even more pennies. 

Painting your walls will also make a big difference - and is one of the cheapest ways to revamp a room. Wilko do a great range of budget paints, how cute would a touch of pink look in a refreshed bathroom? Make sure you choose a bathroom-specific paint though, which is moisture-resistant. 

Finally, popping in some new accessories such as a mirror and lantern for cosy candles will add a touch of spa-like luxury. 

Bathroom budget: £500

If you've got £500 to spend, you could think about splashing out for a new shower for something a bit more up-to-date. And while you're there, why not replace your wall tiles too? I've measured up some classic metro tiles using my bathroom measurements - where the tiles go up to the ceiling. Finally, with the remaining pennies in your budget, pop an artificial fern stem in a beautiful new vase for a touch of greenery (and a low maintenance one too!)

Bathroom budget: £750

Finally while £750 might not seem like a lot when thinking about renovating a bathroom, there's lots of big changes you could make for that money. 

Is there anything that screams luxury more than a free-standing roll top bath?! Lay some stylish ceramic floor tiles too, and you've completely transformed the space for less than a grand. If you're still looking for a touch of class then a beautiful traditional-style radiator and heated towel rail will do the trick. Finally, pop two wall lights either side of the mirror above your sink to create a cosy ambience. 

See! I said you'd be able to work wonders, regardless of your budget!
