Weekend Mini-Makes: DIY boho cushion covers for £2.50

New blog series alert! I thought over the summer I would share some ideas for quick, simple and best of all cheap DIY's that you can complete for less than a tenner. So every Friday I'll be sharing a new one that you can complete over the weekend in a new series called 'Weekend Mini-Makes'. Catchy, right?!

But even better than that, all my mini-makes are designed to be something beginners can try their hand at, whilst also being a relaxing, well being-boost. As I've mentioned before, I regularly turn to DIY and crafting when times get hard, so for me, having a creative outlet has become a vital part of my everyday life. I hope that these simple, cheap crafting ideas will inspire others to have a go, and see if it can make big changes in their life too.

First up, how to create your own boho cushion covers from a ball of wool and an IKEA cushion cover.

Total spend: £5.00 for both covers

You will need:
Gurli cushion cover - IKEA (£1.75 each)
50cm x 50cm Cushion pads (I had some lying around at home, originally from IKEA too)
Ball of wool
Pom pom makers (or alternatively, cardboard, scissors & sellotape)
Fabric paint
Needle & thread
Scissors

Tip: Put the cushion pad in the cover after completing your DIY - it's much easier to work with when empty.

Cushion 1: Pom Pom cushion

This one is super easy - make nine woollen pom poms and attach them onto the cushion cover using a needle and thread. That's basically it, there's really nothing to it.

To make the pom poms you can either invest in some plastic makers which you can find cheaply on places such as Amazon, or if you're a cheapskate (like me) you can make your own using cardboard rings. I've previously shared how to make pom poms the cheap way, but its super easy.

Cushion 2: Tassels and hand-drawn pattern

For this one I made four tassels using the same ball of wool - these are even easier to make than the pom poms, you'll be pleased to hear!

How to make a wool tassel
Take a piece of thick cardboard and wrap the wool around it numerous times until you've got a nice thick wedge of wool. Carefully slide the wool off the cardboard, after which you'll be left with a loop. Cut a small length of wool and slide through the top end of the loop, tying a knot. Twist tightly and finish with a knot.

Cut another piece of wool and wrap around the top section of the loop, about 5cm down, and tie with a knot. You can then snip the ends of the loop to finish off the tassel.

We're then ready to attach them to the corners of the cover. This was the trickiest part of all - I cut a small hole in each corner (be careful when using scissors like this!), poked the end of the tassel through, and popped some stitches in to hold in place.

Then comes the fun bit: painting on a pattern! Firstly I hand drew a really basic diamond pattern using pencil, and then painted over it with some black fabric paint. Applying from the tube directly onto the cover to get a more precise line, however use a paintbrush if you're going for thicker strokes. This needs a steady hand, but I got there in the end! Leave to dry overnight.

Place the cushion pads back in the covers and you're all done! How simple was that? A luxury-looking cushion for a fraction of the price. And the best bit is you can make lots of different designs when your tastes change.
