Recipe: Chocolate Crunch Cake & Custard

Recipe for chocolate crunch cake and chocolate custard, school dinner favourite from my childhood. Easy dessert recipe you can make in a few minutes. Perfect treat for children and all the family.

It's been ages since I shared a recipe, so thought I'd throw it right back to another school dinner favourite (I previously shared my cornflake tart recipe here) with the gooey goodness that is Chocolate Crunch and custard - a real crowd pleaser.

The best part is, this is such an easy dish to make, it'll take you around half an hour to make and I promise will go down a storm!

Ingredients:

For the Chocolate crunch

200g Plain flour
200g Granulated sugar
100g Melted butter
50g Cocoa powder

For the chocolate custard

5 tbsp Custard powder
5tbsp Sugar
2 tbsp Cocoa powder
One pint of Milk

Method:

Starting with the Chocolate Crunch cake, pop the flour, sugar and cocoa in a mixing bowl. Melt the butter in the microwave - keep a close eye on it though, it should only need a few seconds.

Add it to the mixing bowl and use your hands to combine it, until it has the consistency of wet sand.

Pop into a greased or lined baking tin, compacting it down - I usually use a loaf tin, but any cake tin will work.

Put in a pre-heated oven for 20 minutes at 180 degrees. If it want it to be really hard and crunchy, leave to cool for about an hour, otherwise eat it straight away if you prefer it warm and crumbly.

Sprinkle some sugar over the top and cut into slices before serving.

If you want to, you could make homemade chocolate custard using cornflower, egg yolk and milk, however to save time I simply use instant custard powder, adding some cocoa.

To do this simply make up the custard according to the instructions on the packet - you usually warm up the milk and custard powder on the hob. Then add the cocoa powder one tablespoon at a time until you get the taste you desire.

I usually stick to only two tablespoons of cocoa as I like my custard quite milky, however add more to get a rich, chocolatey custard.

You can serve either hot or cold, and the chocolate crunch will keep for a few days - exactly the same as a usual cake. If you don't eat it all up in one go, of course!

Was chocolate crunch one of your childhood favourites? Which school dinner would you like to see me make next?

Thanks for reading,
