How I organise toys in a small home without a playroom

We don't have a playroom in our small home. It's currently one (of many) things that irritate me about this house. Therefore the vast majority of the kids toys live in our dining room. I mean, we don't technically have a dining room either, but we won't go into all that now.

So as a result, the conservatory is piled high with more the toys and crafty bits than any three-year-old could possibly need. Since I've been working from home these past three months, I've been based at the dining table amongst said piles of stuff, so to say that its got on my nerves is an understatement. Enough was finally enough last week, and I decided a huge declutter and rethink was needed out here.

I've actually had this IKEA Ivar unit sitting in my hallway for about eight months waiting to return it, would you believe? I'd initially ordered it last year with the intention of doing a little hack, however changed my mind and decided to take it back. That obviously hasn't been possible recently, so I had another rethink, and thought it could possibly work out here, to help with all the never-ending storage issues we have.

So I got to work decluttering and working out what we wanted to keep, what we didn’t, and filling lots of storage tubs - all labelled up with my new label maker of course!

Want to organise your space better? Here's some simple tips to help you do this...

Tips for organising your space

Give everything a home - I think the secret to organising these things is having a system. So for us, its these plastic tubs and magazine files, which are now home to a huge amount of stuff. Rather than have everything thrown in various places, everything has a home - which in turn makes it easier to tidy up at the end of the day too. Label your boxes to help you keep them tidy going forward.

Declutter regularly - I know, I always come back to this one, but it really is key when living in a small space with limited storage. You can find some of my top decluttering and spring cleaning tips here - I have to be strict with myself to keep on top of clutter otherwise we'd be overrun. This involves regular charity shop and clothing bank donations, as well as selling bits online too - I probably do this once a season, to make things feel a bit more manageable.

Rotate toys - Something I’ve been doing since my daughter was born, I keep toys stored under her bed, in the storage boxes in my TV stand, and some ‘out’ in the conservatory. Every couple of months when she gets bored I swap these over, which not only gives me a bit of peace that day (always welcomed!), but means I only need to have some of her stuff ‘on show' at any one time.

Keep it looking uniform - Using the same storage tubs or choosing those of complimentary colour and size, will keep everything looking uniform - honestly it will make your cupboard/unit look so much neater. Not into a plain scheme? How about rainbow colour theme to give it an eye-catching and fun look?

Hidden storage - When buying new items I always try to think about how I might be able to use it for storage too - everything in my home needs to be doing double the work! I've shared previously my favourite pieces of furniture for saving space in small homes, but basically try to look for things that have hidden storage within them. For example little ladies IKEA play kitchen has got lots of space inside, perfect for storing more toys within crates. Even my TV stand has got storage within it - and I think for me, that's the key to living in a small home without feeling like you're surrounded by mountains of stuff.

How do you manage your toy storage? Do you have a playroom, or do you have to fit their bits in around the house too?
