Finishing off a room can often be the hardest part of a room makeover. You've got the colour on the walls, the perfect furniture and you've chosen a rug that really makes the space. But what now? Bare shelves and empty sideboards might look fab if you're going for a minimalist look, but in terms of accessorising it can be hard to know where to start.
I thought I'd share five simple styling ideas you can steal for you own home - and the best part? I bet you've already got lots of these accessories lying around at home already.
Styling idea no.1: Group two or three items together
Generally, groups of three are more pleasing to the eye, however when taking pictures for this post, I've realised I tend to arrange two items together when styling. Whether you choose to group two or three (any more than three in a small space and things start to look a little cluttered), remember to vary the heights of your items to add interest and fill space more effectively. Keep them in the same colour palette to compliment your room.

Styling idea no.2: Create a houseplant haven
This is my default setting when it comes to styling, but I promise there's no blank space a pretty houseplant can't improve. Empty spot on a shelf? Houseplant. Boring windowsill? Houseplant. Awkward corner? Chuck one in a planter.
Our spare room is a plain, blank canvas, and I've always felt torn when deciding what to do with it. I've considered wallpaper, built-in cupboards and wooden panelling, but in an attempt to jazz it up while making a decision, I popped a couple of artificial plants around the bed, and hey presto I fell in love with it. Use a trailing ivy to fill blank spaces under shelves, and again vary the height of your plants for interest.
Idea to steal: Filling a vase with some stems such as eucalyptus is also a great way of adding height - vases aren't just for flowers!
Styling idea no.3: Tray of items
Trays are a great way of grouping items together to create a neat, styled space, rather than having a random collection of bits. It doesn't have to be a traditional tray though - wooden chopping boards, or candle plates work in exactly the same way.
Idea to steal: Pop a tray on a footstool or coffee table, and collect some items of similar colour palette to display on it. Go for something with some height, such as a vase of flowers, some smaller accessories such as my vintage bud vases, and finally add a candle for a cosy touch.
Styling idea no.4: Stack of books
Beautiful coffee table books are great for switching things up a bit, especially when stacked on shelves, and for setting a colour theme. You don't have to display them on a bookshelf either - I love to lay two or three down to create a base for displaying accessories.
Idea to steal: Stack two or three books on a tray, and top off with a vase of flowers and some smaller accessories for a personal touch.
Styling idea no.5: Add a quirky accessory
If all else fails, pop a gold flamingo on your sideboard.
Idea to steal: A statement piece will always to make an impact wherever you style it, and is a fab way of finishing off a space. I found this gold pineapple candle holder in Primark of all places, and Ringo the Flamingo sits pride of place on my upcycled bureau.
