This time last year I made over my daughter's nursery into a 'big girls room' - admittedly, this was an attempt to get to sleep in her own room! - but I was so pleased with outcome, particularly because it was all done through accessories only, no redecoration at all.
I still absolutely love it - the pink and yellow together even inspired my home office makeover later on in the year - however I've always felt like there was something missing, which I couldn't quite put my finger on. I had an idea before Christmas to add some colour in here, and after much deliberation, finally got round to tackling it this weekend.
As I've mentioned (many times) before, I'm hoping 2021 is the year we finally move on from this home, so a large job such as removing the wallpaper for a full on redec isn't something I want to get into right now - however adding a scalloped half-painted wall around the rest of the room was something I could do quickly and easily in here. And its made SUCH a difference - its the final touch which pulls the room together.
I absolutely love a bit of colour blocking at the moment - it made the home office makeover I did last year, so I knew I wanted to go for this again. It's the perfect way of adding some colour without going too bold, and keeping a small, poorly-lit room light and bright. I wanted to add something a little more interesting though, so went for a scallop-edge, after seeing so many beautiful versions of this on Instagram and Pinterest recently.
To get started, mark a line all the way around the room at a height of your choice - I've gone with 50 inches above the floor, which I think works well with the height of the window and the bookshelves.
To do this I simply used frog tape all the way around, checking the line is straight as you go with a spirit level. Then use a round shaped item such as a plate to draw the scallops above the frog tape.
Deciding where to start with your scallops is totally up to you - I started in one corner and went around the room, to ensure I didn't have a cut-off scallop in the corners.
Now you can start painting: Paint onto the bottom half of the wall, going up to the frog tape. When your paint is almost dry (but not quite to avoid chipping) pull off the frog tape and paint in the scallops. Use an angled brush and go slow to keep the lines straight.
I've gone with a darker rose shade of pink to match the wallpaper - Little Green 'Hellebore', and have changed a couple of the pieces in the room in order to avoid a clash. I've changed the pink drapes to a mustard voile from Argos, and am intending to add a mini gallery wall above the chest of drawers, as I feel the sharp angles of the mirror don't really compliment the soft curves of the scallops.
What do you think - is this something you'd like to do in your own home?
