How my home (& style!) has changed in five years

2019 marks five whole years since we moved into our first home. Whilst it's absolutely crazy how quickly the time has flown, so much has happened since we got the keys to Dove Cottage back in July 2014. So, because its fun to look back and see how far you've come, here's some throwbacks from the past five years (I'm seriously cringing at some of these photos!), and how I've worked around my ever-changing tastes with no major works and little more than a paintbrush.

Living room
Redecoration wise, the most drastic changes took place in here as we were faced with postbox red (including on the ceiling!) when we moved into the house. You can read my full room makeover post here, however not too much has changed since then, except some tweaking of furniture and accessories. If you've been following me a while you'll know we used to have a coffee table in here, however little bumped heads meant that had to go, and I'm so much happier with this space now we've replaced it with a radiator cover and large mirror.

2015: Pre-upcycled coffee table (and better photography skills, clearly!)

2016: The coffee table getting the chalk paint treatment made a huge difference...

2018: Coffee table is out, a few gold touches and a big planter to fill that awkward corner - updating your accessories and rethinking the space you have is a great way to revamping a room without completely redecorating/knocking down walls.

Spare bedroom
Another room that's seen a lot of changes in five years, however strangely without actually redecorating the walls. Back when I was obsessed with all things shabby chic this was my VERY floral guest room, however little lady came along and it quickly room became a nursery - which I think suits the wallpaper so much better! I think when she gets a bit bigger we'll think about redecorating to create a more grown-up bedroom for her, but I love this room as it is for now.

2015: The way it was - there's a full room tour here if you want to see the guest bedroom in all its floral glory

2018: A little shift around creates a nursery much more fitting for this room, I think you'll agree - and because no redecoration took place in this room whatsoever, its been a very budget-friendly update

Downstairs Loo
Fingers crossed this room is unrecognisable (mainly because it was pretty hideous beforehand) as it took some sheer guts to go to the dark side in our very beige downstairs loo. A full new suite wasn't financially doable so I DIY-ed some wooden panelling, and replaced the vinyl for just over £100 all-in.

2014: The blandest of all beige toilets, I'm embarrassed to admit we lived with this for four whole years...

2018: A huge revamp and its SO much more easy on the eye

Smallest spare room
This one has seen the most revamps, from a junked up and unused 'snug' to sewing room, to nursery and finally a spare bedroom. I've got another one planned in here this year, because I'm still not happy and think its crying out for some colour.

2015: Sewing room - this one didn't last long I'm afraid, as my initial plan was to put baby in here (back when I had NO IDEA how much stuff a baby brings with it!) This sideboard was another upcycling project, and eventually ended up in the conservatory before it fell apart and was replaced with my antique bureau.

2017: Gender neutral nursery - I still love this room, however she definitely needed the space, hence why we swapped the two spare rooms around...

2018: I then turned this room into our guest bedroom which I tried to give a scandi feel, although its still missing something (hence the planned mini revamp)

Does anyone else feel that their taste has changed drastically over the past few years? How do you tackle wanting to redecorate every so often without breaking the bank?

Thanks for reading,
Sam Xx
