Bedroom updates for all budgets (from £50!)

Small bedroom updates for all budgets, from just £50. Featuring ideas of how to spend your budget, including new bedroom furniture, new flooring and new window shutters. Plus a pink and green mood board for a stylish bedroom update.

Time for another of my £50 room revamps, where I put together some budget updates for every room in the house. This time I'm focusing on the bedroom, where I feel it can often seem like you need to have a complete redecoration to make any difference. But I'm here to show you that some simple styling touches can make a big change to how you feel about a room that should be somewhere you can go to unwind at the end of a long day.

So keep reading for ideas on what you could do to revamp your bedroom, even if you've only got a few pounds to spend. Obviously I've picked a colour theme/style at random, but this is just to give you some ideas of what you can do with your budget.

Please note: I have priced up these items according to my rather modest-sized 5m x 2.5m bedroom, so bear that in mind if you're blessed with a bigger one! I've also not included labour costs for things like the laying of the carpet, as they can vary greatly according to where you are in the country.

You might think you can't do a lot with just £50, but just refreshing your walls or woodwork can make a huge difference to the look and feel of a room. While you're there, why not give your room a declutter and full spring clean - this is the easiest and cheapest thing you can do to any room, and you'll be surprised at the change it can make.

If you've got an old mdf or melamine wardrobe or chest of drawers, why not give them a new lease of life through upcycling - I did this a couple of years ago to my wardrobe and it's one of my favourite makeovers ever - have a read of my full DIY tutorial here, its a lot easier than you think and has completely transformed our bedroom.

Adding some new accessories, and giving your bedside table a refresh can also make a big change - add a houseplant (this one's artificial if, like me, you're terrible at keeping things alive!), a relaxing smelling candle, and pop a new cushion on your bed.

If you've got a little more money to play with you can make huge changes to your bedroom. Why not add some wall panelling behind your bed to really revamp the feel of the room? This seems to be really popular at the moment, I keep seeing people panelling their homes everywhere. I did the very same to transform our downstairs loo a couple of years back - use mdf strips (which you can get cut for free by most hardware stores), and attach to the wall using strong wood glue such as No More Nails. You'll need some silicone or polyfilla to fill any gaps between the wood and the wall, and don't forget to prime the wood before painting. I've calculated this according to my bedroom measurements, and only panelling the back wall behind the bed, so obviously this will cost more if you've got a bigger room.

After that, you'll still have some money in your budget for a new dressing table or desk, and something soft for under your feet - perfect if you want to cover up your existing floor. Finally, grab a pretty storage basket to throw all those bits that clutter up surfaces, such as hair dryer/straighteners/bottles of products etc.

Lamps from Cult Furniture / Prints from Desenio / Throw from Cult Furniture / Bedside tables from Cult Furniture / Books both from Oliver Bonas / Pink armchair from Cult Furniture / Bedding from Next

Look at all the changes you can make if you've got £500 spare! Change your bedside tables and pop some new lamps on them, along with some beautiful new bedding and cosy throw. Not sure how to style your beautiful new bedside tables? Adding a stack of books is always the easiest way to style a bare surface. Choose books in colours that compliment your scheme.

If you've got an empty corner that's difficult to style, why not go for an armchair to add a touch of elegance? Finally, adding some prints to the walls can fill blank space, and tie your whole look together.

A bigger budget will mean you can update your bed (seriously, how stunning is this one?!), and add a beautiful new light fitting. One of the main things you can do to make an impact is changing your window treatments - I've measured up my window and could fit some DIY shutters for a really reasonable £180.

On a more practical note, if you're not a fan of your current flooring why not have a look at replacing it? I've found a cheap but cosy neutral carpet to show that you don't need to spend a fortune to make a big difference, however if carpet isn't your thing, how about having a look to see what state your floorboards are in? Revamping with some sanding/painting might work really well.

Finally, there's some money left in the budget for a few more accessories - I've picked out a houseplant and pot here which would add a touch of nature to your room.

Is updating your bedroom on your to-do list for 2020?

Sam Xx
