Nursery Makeover: A Big Girls Room

I'm not gonna lie, this entire makeover was purely for the purposes of getting my daughter to sleep in her own bed all night. We'd tried everything, so the only remaining option was clearly bribery. So here it is: a big girls bedroom which surely even the worst sleeper in history will want to stay in all night?!

I've always had touches of yellow and pink in here (my original nursery post is here), so wanted to play that up a bit and really add some more colour in here. However, with us wanting to move this year (although that's probably under threat at the moment isn't it!) I didn't see the point in redecorating, or spending too much money on a complete makeover. So this is more of a accessories-only revamp. But its really testament to what you can do on a budget, or when redecorating isn't an option.

Before: The room as its been for the last couple of years
Bed
We were definitely a bit late getting her into a toddler bed, but I'd had my eye on this IKEA number for over a year. This is the Minnen, and I originally wanted the yellow version, but by the time I got round to ordering one it was discontinued (isn't that always the way?!) so had to go for the white one. I was really annoyed with myself to start with, however now that its all finished in here I'm actually glad we've got the white version, as I'm wondering if it would perhaps have been a bit much?

Either way, this is a really lovely little bed, a decent price (compared to some of the others I'd seen anyway!) and extends into two further sizes, so hopefully will last a few years to come. Its also super pretty, which is surely the most important thing isn't it?! We got the extendable mattress from IKEA too, and the bedsheets are from H&M Home and Dunelm. A mustard throw (also H&M Home - you're going to spot a trend here...) adds a pop of colour. On the bed I've added some cushions she already had, and the lion face cushion, which I made. Its a lot easier to make than you might think, and cost me less than a tenner. The step-by-step DIY tutorial can be found here.

Window
This is the same blackout blind we had up here before, I've just added a pom pom trim I had leftover from a previous craft by simply sticking it onto the bottom of the blind using a glue gun (no need to even take the blind down!) I've also changed the curtains for pink drapes to add some colour. These are so soft, and absolute bargains at less than £20 - I really wish I'd have bought them years ago. Again, they're from H&M.

Rug
This was the one item that kicked it all off for me in here. Again, an H&M find, the colours on it are just perfect don't you think? It's definately my favourite thing in here, and fills the little floor space we've got perfectly.

Bookshelves
Once the new bed was in, it took up more space than the cot did, meaning I had to have a little rethink of the space. The armchair moved to the other side of the room, replacing the canopy that hung from the ceiling here. I did attempt to re-dye it yellow, however the less said about that experiment the better. Instead, I've added some picture ledges above the chair to create a little reading corner - these were a bargain at £16.99 from Homebase.

I couldn't resist colour co-ordinating the books, which I found more satisfying that I'd like to admit. If you're thinking of doing something like this yourself, start with separating out all your books into their different colours. Then arrange on the shelf with taller books at the back, smaller ones at the front. Layer them up so you're not left with any wall space showing, and pop some small toys on there too to add interest.

Over on the other side of the room I've arranged her Beatrix Potter books - aka special ones that were a gift from her great grandparents, and I'd therefore like to keep out of reach of her mucky fingers!

Accessories & toys
I haven't added a lot of new toys in here, mainly as she has so much already, but I have moved the dollhouse I revamped for her for Christmas up here. I've also made a couple of other bits - a rainbow wall hanging which has jazzed up this corner a bit, and the final bit which I just finished last week - one of my favourite DIYs I've ever done - this boho-style wall hanging. I shared exactly how to make it over on this post here, however its simply some woollen tassels attached to a stick I found in the garden - literally, as simple as that!

I've also added a large print in a frame, which I got from Desenio, and I've positioned in front of the ugly radiator. How cute is the picture? I thought the colours were perfect for here too.

And thats about it. Some ideas for simple updates you can make to completely change the look of a room without embarking on a full redec. And to say she's pleased with it is an understatement -  every bedtime she looks around her room and tells me; "I love my new room". And in case you're wondering (I don't want to jinx anything) but she's *currently* sleeping through in here. Thank the lord for a H&M Home haul, eh?

Thanks for reading,
Sam Xx
