How to make an abstract face cushion {Weekend Mini-Make}

Its time for another Weekend Mini-Make: a quick craft you can complete over the weekend for less than a tenner. And even better than that, all my mini-makes are designed to be something beginners can try their hand at, whilst also being a relaxing, well-being boost. As I've mentioned before, I regularly turn to DIY and crafting when times get hard, so for me, having a creative outlet has become a vital part of my everyday life. I hope that these simple, cheap crafting ideas will inspire others to have a go, and see if it can make big changes in their life too.

This week is one of my easiest mini-makes ever - it honestly took me about half an hour, and cost just a few pounds to make. Even better its a great dupe for some of the pricey cushion covers that are currently on the high street - don't these abstract style faces seem to be everywhere at the moment? Well the good news is there's no need to spend a fortune trying to keep up with the latest trends - because here's how to make one yourself for just a few pounds.

You will need: 

A plain cushion cover - I bought a cheap plain one on eBay for just £2.19, but any old plain coloured cover will work, even the back of another cushions perhaps?  

Embroidery trim - Again I found this on eBay, I bought a metre length of one 12mm wide for £3.30
Glue gun

Pencil
Scissors 

Total spend: £5.49

How to make: 


Start by deciding on a design - I sketched a few drawings onto a piece of paper before settling on one style. Using a pencil, lightly sketch your chosen design onto the front of the cushion cover. I found these abstract style faces look best if they're done in a 'one line' style, meaning when you're sketching the face out, draw in a continuous line with no gaps. This will also make things much easier when you're attaching the trim too. 

Once you're happy with your design, you simply need to glue the trim onto the cushion cover. You could handstitch this, however for ease and speed I just went with my trusty old glue gun. Working slowly and carefully, apply a strip of glue along your pencil lines, sticking the trim down straight away. Bear in mind that the glue dries fairly quickly, so do this a little at a time. I added an eye too, for which I cut five shorter places of trim, one longer piece measuring 10cm, and four shorter pieces measuring 2cm to create the eyelashes. 

Finally, trim any loose threads with scissors to neaten it up, and you're all done! How to refresh a cushion and give an armchair, or your bed a new look in less than an hour.
