How I organised my fridge for £15

How to declutter and organise your fridge. Kitchen organisation tips and inspiration. Using storage hacks and tubs to tidy your food storage

I’m a huge fan of home organisation - I feel like every drawer, cupboard and corner of our house has had the decluttering treatment at some point over the years. I try to declutter all my kitchen cupboards every Spring - I've previously shared how I got on here - and one of my lockdown projects was transforming one of our units into a mini pantry

One space that I’ve always overlooked though, is inside the fridge. I've never really thought too much about how I organise my cheese and vegetables, to be honest. But I’m on a mission to sort out our small home this year, so recently I've been tackling how to arrange things a bit better inside the fridge.

Our fridge before its mini makeover

I spotted some very budget friendly storage containers in the Aldi Special Buys aisle this week, so stocked up and got to work arranging and rearranging all of our chilled items.

Everything I used to organise our fridge:

Small handled baskets - these came as a pack of three for £2.99 and I used six in total

Thin fridge containers x3 - £2.99 each

Total: £14.95

How I organised my fridge
I started off by removing everything from inside the fridge, sorting out what we wanted, what we didn’t. I also took all the shelves out and washed them, making sure I’d given them a really good clean.

After I put everything back, I then worked out how many different types of food we wanted to store in the fridge. I identified six food and drink we wanted to store on the top two shelves: cheese, cold meats, cans, glass bottles and jars.

I then arranged these in the six small baskets, which fitted perfectly in the fridge, width wise. The good thing about these is they have handles, which is helpful for getting things down from the top shelf, especially for us short girls.

I then fitted the thin containers into the bottom vegetable drawer - I believe these are meant to hold cans, but they were the perfect fit for this area. I then separated my vegetables into different types, making it easier to quickly grab what you want while cooking, and also to see what we need to add to the shopping list.

Finally I left the two middle shelves free for larger items.

Exactly how I've broken down each food category in my fridge

Work out how many ‘categories’ of food you have before you start, for example ‘cheese’, ‘cold meats’, ‘cans’ etc. That way you can make sure you’re buying the correct number of containers and eliminating waste. Also think about what types of food you use most, and will therefore need easy access to.

You don't need to spend a fortune on containers - most supermarkets or budget stores stock small storage tubs or baskets that will work.

When stocking your fridge, get rid of any excess packaging you don’t need to save maximum space. Obviously most chilled items will need to stay in their original packaging, however I’ve removed items like eggs from their box, for example.

And finally, an obvious one: always make sure you’re storing raw meat on shelves below cooked food to avoid contamination.

I'm really pleased with how this has turned out, it's only a couple of small changes, but has made a big difference.

What do you think? Is the fridge a space in your home you'd like to organise better?
