Storage solutions in small homes

Storage solutions, tips and advice for small houses, living spaces, flats, apartments and homes from dovecottageblog.com

So as you've probably guessed by now, I'm all about trying to turn my modest, fairly modern house into my dream 'vintage cottage', and while I have the most fun doing this, sometimes I do hit snags. Namely with storage...
If you've ever owned a more modern property you'll know that storage spaces is usually a problem. Coupled with the fact that I'm not a fan of having everyday household 'things' on display, and it can get quite tricky to organise my home! However I've tried to come up with ideas to keep things tidy and hidden away, whilst still being pretty and practical!

There are a grand total of two cupboards in our house, one under the stairs we use for tools, the Hoover and general junk, and one by the front door I've hidden coats/shoes/umbrellas in. That leaves us with no airing cupboard space. However, after spotting these pretty (and very cheap) boxes from good old Ikea, we decided to keep our sheets, pillows etc in those on some shelves in our smallest spare room.

I don't know about you, but I find our kitchen seems to attract the most 'junk'. Any post and important documents seem to end up in here(plus my husband has a rather annoying habit of dumping his wallet and keys on the kitchen counter every evening!) So I bought him his own 'man basket' which lives in our hallway, and is somewhere he can dump anything and everything he wants to, without it all being on show!

I also found this beautiful 'Bills' file, and a crate which hide any nasty envelopes/letters, and covered a horrible red box file which holds all our important documents with this lovely wrapping paper from Sainsbury's. Washing machine warrantees don't need to be ugly!

I also like to keep as many things in pretty containers, displaying things like pens and pasta in an attractive way that fits in with the vintage feel of the room.

In the lounge, my life saving purchase is our TV stand and baskets (again Ikea), which hide a multitude of sins. The baskets are fairly sturdy and we currently store all our CDs, DVDs, and my hubby's PlayStation games in these four baskets.

Something else I do is hide our Sky box in this lovely tray, which I also use to store remote controls and games controllers too. You can probably see I also hide our landline phone behind the TV! Ridiculous, I know - I definitely have a problem!

I also made a soap dispenser for each of our bathrooms using my fave kilner jars, and keep our shampoos/toiletries in these lovely baskets from Dunelm. They even came with lovely mini chalkboard tags, so we've got one each!

Finally, our spare room is where my dressing table lives, and I've used a pretty box I found in Cath Kidston in which I keep my toiletries/perfumes etc.
