7 easy ways to transform a room for pennies

Easy ways to decorate a room with no money. Transform your home without spending any money or for pennies using accessories, revamping and changing things around

As I've mentioned before, we're not able to make all the big changes I'd like to to our home, both financially and due to the fact this isn't our 'forever home'. However this shouldn't stop you from making changes you want - I'm definitely the queen of having a revamp on a budget! So here's my top tips for transforming a room without spending a penny!

1. Make as many bits as you can
Updating your cushions/throws can give a room a new lease if life, and it doesn't have to cost the earth to do this. I wanted to get some new cushions for my sofa recently, so bought some material from eBay for £1.70 for half a metre, plus a Pom Pom trim costing £1.75 a metre, to create some new covers for my old cushion pads.

2. Update artwork
You can buy prints from places such as Etsy and small Instagram shops for very little, or even design your own by writing your favourite quote by hand and framing it - or how about printing one out after designing it on a free programme such as picmonkey.com? I made this calendar for our kitchen quite quickly and for absolutely nothing!

3. Rearrange your decor
This is the quickest and easiest way I find to give a room a bit of a revamp. Why not arrange things a bit differently on a shelf, or switch those candles into another room? It's surprising how different an area can look after a quick revamp. I'm forever faffing with all my accessories - here's how styling my bookcase slightly differently can give it a new lease of life.

4. Touch up paintwork
This is definitely the easiest way to give a room a refresh - plus everyones got some leftover paint in their shed haven't they?! It's really quite surprising how fresher a room can look after simply touching up the walls and woodwork.

5. Add fresh flowers
Flowers always create a nice focal point, so how about picking a couple of those pretty stems from the garden to display in a simple jam jar your home? However, if like me you're no good at keeping plants alive, you can always pick up some beautiful blooms for a couple of pounds from your local supermarket.

6. Have a spring clean
This might sound really obvious, but I don't think there's anything better than having a major clear out, and a room can feel so much fresher and brighter afterwards. Having a declutter can give your shelves a fresh lease of life too - less is defiantly more when it comes to styling surfaces, so can you chuck out any of those old books, or pack away some of the 'stuff' that its so easy to accumulate.

7. Upcycle existing accessories
Theres nothing worse than deciding you want to change a colour scheme and have to replace all your accessories, so how about upcycling some bits using a tester pot of paint, which you can usually pick up for a couple of pounds. I painted this photo frame and some table mats when I decided I wanted to add some grey into my lounge.

If you want to go for something a bit bigger, I find that rustoleum chalk paint always does the trick whatever type of surface you use it on. I painted my coffee, console and side tables using the same tin of paint, and still have some leftover for future projects. The paint is so easy to use, and even better than that there's no need for sanding/prepping beforehand! I blogged about how I upcycled my dining table and chairs here.

Hope you've found this helpful - what tips do you have for updating a space without spending any money?
