De-cluttering is easier than you think though – here’s my top spring-cleaning tips, and some easy ways in which you can save space, and keep your home clutter-free.
Not sure you've got time to dedicate to a proper Spring clean? I've put together a FREE plan to cleaning your home, even if you've only got 20 minutes spare a day. You can download your copy of '28 days to a clean and clutter-free home' by subscribing to my newsletter here.
Re-work your wardrobes
This is the biggest one for me. We don't have a lot of floor space upstairs, and need to fit all our clothes into two wardrobes and a chest of drawers, which is hard work to say the least. Regular clear outs every new season is the only way I can do this, and I have to be absolutely ruthless - asking myself three questions:
Have I worn it in the last year?
Does it hold sentimental value?
Would I buy it again today?
If the answer to at least two of those is no then whatever it is has to go to either a charity shop, clothing bank or eBay, no questions asked!
Save the space you have
Using ultra-thin clothes hangers can help you to squeeze even more clothes into your wardrobe, maximising the space you already have. And when packing clothes into drawers, rolling them up helps to fit more in, and keeps them from getting too creased (also a good tip when packing a suitcase!) I also use drawer dividers to organise items better, and fit even more things in.
To save even more space you could rotate your wardrobe according to each season by removing your winter jumpers/boots/coats once spring rolls around, packing them away into storage boxes on top of your wardrobe? That way you’ll only ever need to find space for half your clothes at any one time.
Leave no cupboard or drawer untouched
If you follow me on Instagram, you'll know that this was pretty much my 2019 - I embarked on an almighty kitchen cupboard clear out, which to be fair, was years overdue. This is one of the easiest ways you can make a difference to your home though, you wouldn't believe the rubbish your kitchen drawers can accumulate! I shared my top tips for tackling your kitchen here, but take this opportunity to rethink how you're storing everything, and use drawer and shelf dividers to make more space inside the cupboards.
Schedule de-cluttering into your week
So this is probably the most boring thing anyone could ever suggest, but setting aside a few minutes every Sunday afternoon has worked wonders for me. I'm terrible for putting off a major spring clean, but physically schedule some time to work through one cupboard/draw/space a week, and you’ll quickly get into a routine. I did this last year, and in the end I found I actually looked forward to working on the next space every week. Again, be brutal: if you don’t absolutely need it, it’s got to go. Every few inches of space counts! Make sure to take some before and after pictures too – you’ll be surprised at the impact you can make in just a few minutes.
Maximise your storage options
You can spring clean all day long, but if you don't have enough storage to hide your junk you'll never clear the clutter. This is a big issue for me as our home has only two built in cupboards, so we’ve had to get very creative with storage. Almost every piece of furniture we own contains hidden storage, one of my favourites being our slim shoe cupboard, which holds over 30 pairs of shoes without taking up valuable hallway space. I’ve previously shared the other pieces of furniture I couldn’t live without here.
If you’re stuck with the furniture you have, then storage boxes can hide a multiple of sins. Choose pretty ones that you don't mind being on show – I’ve got wicker baskets absolutely everywhere, for example, hiding everything from magazines to toys, bed linen to books.
Our kitchen was becoming increasingly cluttered with paperwork/important letters/recipe books etc, so I invested in a filing cabinet which although super ugly, holds a ridiculous amount of stuff, and helps me to keep organised too (no more hunting for the passport the night before a flight!). Ours is hidden away in the coat cupboard, so isn’t on show and doesn't take up valuable space.
Utilise lost space
Every spare inch is possible storage space! Think under the bed, on top of the wardrobe and even under the sofa - babies toys don't need to be stacked in a corner or all over the floor! I’m currently on the lookout for some nice looking under-sofa storage boxes which I can whip out and fill full of plastic crap at the drop of a hat, meaning I don't have to sit surrounded by junk once she's gone to bed.
