However, for obvious reasons the current lockdown situation has meant I've not been able to get out and about to find all the supplies, and lets face it, Easter faffery isn't exactly 'essential' anyway is it? I still wanted to get creative though - always my go-to during tough times - so have decided to do what I can using things I had laying around the house. And to be honest, being frugal is probably a better idea anyway isn't it? So I've styled my dining table for Easter lunch in two different ways, to show that you can create a nice display without spending a penny.
Table linen
Definitely the best place to start. I've actually only got a table runner at the moment (something I should put right when all this is over and we can go shopping again!) but wanted a blank base that wouldn't be too distracting from all the flowers, so had to think outside the box a bit. And when I say outside the box I mean, use a bedsheet. Yep, that spotty fabric is a single bedsheet from the spare bed - actually the perfect fit would you believe?! However, if all you've got is a regular table cloth and you'd prefer a runner, why not fold it under to create a runner shape?
Centrepiece
You definitely need a main focus for your table, so its a good idea to create a statement centrepiece. With not a lot to play with, I went for a chopping board from the kitchen, and popped a vase of sunflowers on top. An alternative look I've styled is using my faux twig tree, from Hobbycraft last year, off which I've hung some DIY paper decorations (more on that below!) A really lovely idea if you don't have fresh flowers though is to create your own natural 'twig tree' using sticks from the garden popped into a vase of water, off which you can then hang decorations.
Napkins
I've tried my hand a couple of different ways of styling the plates here - the first one a simple napkin topped with a stem from a bouquet I had. This is a really straightforward but effective way of styling your place settings, and adding a little pop of colour too.
Alternatively, if you're looking for something a little more 'Easter-y' then I've also had a go at styling the napkins in a cute bunny ears shape. This is so easy to do, and will take you about 20 seconds - you'll just need something egg-shaped to pop in the middle. How about a chocolate egg, or you can get some beautiful wooden eggs online which you could even hand write names on? I've simply gone with some plastic egg decorations I had laying around from last year.
Flowers
Because no table setting would be complete without some flowers now would it? I had a bouquet that was on the turn, so split up the stems into different sized jars and vases - a great way of filling blank space and creating a bit of interest. Some of the petals from the dying stems had fallen off too, so rather than chuck them, I scattered them around to add a bit of colour.
DIY decorations
Last week I shared my super simple paper easter decorations - which can again be made with crafty bits you've got laying around the house. Its a really simple make too, something relaxing and creative to try while stuck at home, and perfect for beginners too. You can find the full DIY tutorial here, and the good thing about this one is it can be easily adapted to other seasons - wouldn't they look nice in a pumpkin shape, or a Christmas tree?
Candles & sweet treats
I found a bag of mini eggs in the cupboard (I know, how could I have missed those?!), so popped them into a couple of tea cups for a really simple addition. And finally, light some candles and pop them around to create a cosy atmosphere. I added a candlestick which usually sits on my kitchen shelf, and a couple of votives from my lounge. Always the easiest way of creating a cosy feel.
And there you have it - how to style your Easter table using things you've already got at home. Which look is your favourite?
Thanks for reading,
Sam Xx
