Its time for another Weekend Mini-Make: a quick craft you can complete over the weekend for less than a tenner. And even better than that, all my mini-makes are designed to be something beginners can try their hand at, whilst also being a relaxing, well-being boost. As I've mentioned before, I regularly turn to DIY and crafting when times get hard, so for me, having a creative outlet has become a vital part of my everyday life. I hope that these simple, cheap crafting ideas will inspire others to have a go, and see if it can make big changes in their life too.

This week might be my favourite mini-make ever - I've used things I had lying around the house to create something brand new for my newly transformed spare room come home office.

You will need:

A piece of thick fabric - I've used an old bath mat
Coloured paint - I used two different tester pots I had laying around the house
Wool for tassels & stars
Needle
Wooden dowel
Paintbrush or sponge
Pencil
Scissors

Total spend: £0

How to make:
To start with decide the size you want your wall hanging to be - I've gone with 45cm by 90cm, the perfect size for the gap in my blank wall. You'll then need to find or cut a piece of fabric to this size - I'd recommend going for a thick material. I've used an old bath mat, which I found was the perfect thickness.

To give the material some structure and make sure it hangs properly on the wall, you'll need to add a wooden dowel to the top of it. To do this, fold the top 3-4cm of the mat over (check its big enough for the dowel to fit snugly!), and use a glue gun to stick it down.

Slide your dowel into the gap. If you want to you can attach a piece of string or wool to either end of the dowel, in order to create something to hang it from. However, to make sure its super secure, mine is actually hanging from two nails positioned under the dowel, and the wool is really just for show.

Now for the fun bit - creating a design! I sketched out some ideas on a piece of paper beforehand, and then drew my design out onto the mat in pencil - I knew I wanted something to fit in with my new boho-style home office, so went with something simple, a moon and stars.

I then painted onto the fabric using some regular tester pots I had leftover from previous projects. You could use fabric paint here, however to save money I decided to use regular paint, and they worked just as well. For the best application, I used a paintbrush and a sponge.

Once your paint is dry you can add any extra details you like. I've used wool to hand stitch some stars onto the corner, using a strong needle. To finish it off I popped some woollen tassels along the bottom of the wall hanging, attaching them by simply threading the top strand of wool through the mat using a needle, and tying to secure.

I needed 16 tassels to fill the full width of the hanging, which used about a third of a ball of wool in each colour. They're really simple to make too, they took me about an hour in total.
