Your bedroom should be your sanctuary - somewhere relaxing to escape to after a long day. Using calming tones and soft textures can not only add some style to your room, but can also work to aid a good night’s sleep. I've written a lot before about transforming your bedroom into a calming space, however if redecorating isn't an option right now, there are lots of ways you can use simple soft furnishings to transform your space, without breaking the bank.

Bedlinen

Beautiful soft sheets or bedlinen will dress up any space, so go for the nicest ones you can afford to aid sleep. I always choose a plain, neutral colour for my duvet cover, as this enables me to add interest through accessories such as cushions, and means I can easily change them according to different seasons, or when I get bored (which is quite often!)

Throws

Pop a cosy throw or bedspread across the foot of your bed, going for something in a complimentary colour to the rest of your room. You could even layer up to add depth - in my bedroom I sometimes go for a simple grey throw, covered by a faux fur one to add some interest. Throws are also a great opportunity to add a pop of colour, particularly if you've gone for neutral with your other furnishings.

Cushions

When it comes to cushions, you can either go for the more is more approach (my personal favourite!), or keep it simple with two big cushions propped up in front of your pillows. Whichever you decide, choose shades of a complimentary colour palette, and mix up your textures to add depth. I always stick to an odd number of cushions, placing the larger ones at the back, and a smaller feature cushion at the front.

Tip: Use slightly larger pads for your cushion covers to give that plump, luxurious hotel-room look.

Headboard

A really simple way of completely changing the look of your bed is adding or replacing your current headboard - velvet will always add a luxurious texture, and a material like rattan or wood, for example, will add depth. Using a tonal colour scheme, where you choose lots of different shades of one colour (such as pink, below) is bang on-trend too.

Rug

No bedroom is complete without a soft rug under your feet – particularly on a cold winter’s morning, and it’s the easiest way of adding some warmth too. Choose one big enough to sit under your bed frame to create the illusion of more space in the room.

Tip: Stuck with a carpet that you're not keen on, but can't replace it at the moment? Layer up more than one rug to make a real statement.

Wall hangings

A stylish wall hanging is a really simple way of adding texture to a space, particularly if you’re struggling with how to tackle lots of blank walls. I had a go at making a simple one from wool (you can find the full DIY tutorial here), but if the boho style isn’t your thing, what about using a rug or beautiful piece of fabric?

Curtains

Choosing the right window treatment will make a huge difference to the look and feel of a bedroom. A blackout blind or traditional style shutters will help keep light to a minimum, but adding some luxurious made to measure curtains will work to soften your windows. Going for bespoke curtains has the added bonus of meaning they fit perfectly to your space, and you won’t lose any all-important heat during the winter months.

Choose floor length curtains to add luxury, and think about how your chosen colour or pattern will work in your room. Something light and airy will work open up the space and make it feel larger, perfect for smaller room, however a darker shade can add cosiness and warmth.

Tip: The positioning of your curtain pole can make a big difference - hang your curtains high to give the impression of higher ceilings.

How have you used soft furnishings in your bedroom?
