10 budget ways to give your bathroom a new lease of life

How to update a bathroom on a budget. From painting tiles, to adding new flooring, lighting and stylish storage. Bathroom interior inspiration.

If you’re stuck with a dated bathroom or one that’s in desperate need of a facelift, it can feel like you need to spend a fortune ripping it all out.

However there’s a number of simple changes and DIYs you can do without breaking the bank. All of these are things I’ve done myself in our home, or are simple projects anyone can take on to improve the look of any space.

10 budget ways to give your bathroom a new lease of life

Lay a new vinyl floor

One of the best ways to update any space is by changing the floor. I’ve previously laid a new vinyl floor in my bathroom, and I also used vinyl peel and stick tiles in both my ensuite and kitchen

Both projects were tricky but totally doable, and completely transformed the rooms. Always remember to seal around the edge of any floor in a bathroom with sealant to protect against water.

Paint walls & woodwork

A simple coat of paint will help to brighten up and refresh any space, especially in a dark, dingy bathroom. If your space is poorly lit or with no natural light at all, like our downstairs loo, it can be tricky to know what colours to go for.

One of my favourite ways to combat this is to go for a two-tone look, with a darker colour contrasting against a lighter one. Look at the difference adding a dark grey against the white has made in our WC here.

Go one step further and paint your door to match the woodwork for a greater impact.

Paint tiles

Another DIY project I would recommend to anyone - painting old, dated tiles can completely transform any space. I’ve tackled this in both my kitchen and downstairs toilet, improving some rather grim peach coloured tiles into something much more fresher looking. Not only that, but its a really budget-friendly project - all you need is a can of tile paint, a mini roller and some sugar soap.

Add under sink cabinet

Adding a cabinet to sit around your sink pedestal can not only add some style to a bathroom, but also some much needed storage. You’ll simply need to cut your cabinet to fit around the sink.

However if carpentry isn’t your forte, you don’t need to pay for expensive labour - you can buy sink units made ready to fit around most sinks.

Replace bath panel
One of the biggest changes I've made to our bathroom is replacing the old, tatty plastic bath panel with a traditional style wooden one.

From an online bathroom store, the panel came with full instructions so we were able to fit ourselves, and has made such a huge difference in a small space. It's treated with moisture resistant paint too.

Add new window treatment

Simply changing your blind can instantly update a room - how about a roman blind or even a beautiful wooden shutter?

Add soft lighting

Add a touch of style and instantly warm up your space by adding some soft lighting. I recently installed a wall light above the mirror in our ensuite, and the difference its made has been huge. A really small, cold room now feels updated and even luxury.

Add a big mirror

Create the illusion of space in a small bathroom by putting a large mirror on your blank wall.

New accessories

Adding new items like bath mats, towels and some pretty candles is a really quick and simple way to update any space. Choose complimentary colours to match your other decor, and don't forget to add some greenery too - whether real or fake plants!

Decant toiletries

Give your toiletries a more stylish look by decanting them into glass bottles or stylish dispensers. Choose the same style/colour bottles to give a uniform look, and you can even add labels to give an ultra-organised feel.
