9 simple storage solutions for household items

Simple storage solutions to storing household items. From clothes to toys, cleaning products to bedding. Decluttering organising tips for small homes.

I've mentioned it lots before, but keeping on top of storage in our home is a battle. We have a grand total of two cupboards, so it’s a struggle to find a place for everything.

Recently I've been trying to find solutions to most of our everyday items, as an organised home is, I find, a calm home. I've shared lots of organisation and decluttering tips before, but here's some more ideas for storing everything in your home.

Nine simple solutions to storing household items

Bedding

We don't have an airing cupboard in this house meaning I've always struggled with where to store our bedsheets.

They've had so many different homes in various drawers and spaces over the years, with nowhere really working to be honest. However, a recent purchase of a new cabinet in our living room seems to be the perfect fit, so I now store all our bedding in there in a much more easily accessible way.

Tips for storing bedding:

Firstly, collect a full bed set together, including all sheets/pillowcases etc. Store all bits inside one of the pillowcases, meaning you can easily grab a full set when making up each bed.

Separate out each set according to room, and pop multiple sets together inside a large drawstring bag. This is the best way I've found of storing more than one set together.

I've finished the bags off with a lovely wooden tag I found on Etsy. I went for this rather than a printed label on the front of each sack, as it means I can quickly see which set I need to grab even when the bags are stored closely together.

Towels

I recently found this budget-friendly towel holder which is the perfect fit for the downstairs loo, and frees up precious space in our drawers. We've got a couple of the hooded baby towels too, they hang on the back of the nursery door.

Tips:
Roll towels in a spa style to fit them in and save even more space.

Keep the number of towels you have to a minimum - I recently got rid of any of our old, tatty towels we weren't using, meaning it's easier to store them all neatly.

Mop/Broom

I found these command strip grippers on Amazon*, which I’ve popped on the back of the downstairs toilet door. They're perfect for tucking away things like brooms and mops, which you need easy access to but don't necessarily want always on show or propped up in the hallway (for little ones to pull over constantly!)

My favourite thing about them though is they're really strong, but can be easily removed and switched to another location without damaging the wall or door.

Hoover

I’ve done something similar with the hoover - it came with a wall fitting that also lives on the wall in the downstairs loo. Can you tell that's our main storage space at the moment?!

Shoes

An over the door shoe organiser on the inside of one of the coat cupboard is home to most of our everyday shoes, with a small basket in the hallway for overflow. Our occasional shoes live in a storage box under the bed.

Battery charger

Another thing that gets in the way! We had a hole cut into the back of one of our kitchen cupboards to accommodate the integrated tumble dryer, meaning the hoover battery pack can now be plugged in and hidden away in there.

Toys

The big one - it's a never ending battle to keep on top of toys, so I try to regularly declutter and donate anything they've grown out of to keep on top of things.

Baskets: the secret to most storage in our home to be honest, I have big baskets all over the place for stuff to live in - even better if they've got a lid to hide it all!

Furniture with hidden storage: pretty much every piece of furniture we own has some sort of storage in it, meaning we can chuck stuff in and shut the doors. Our TV stand is currently home to more toys, which I've organised into labelled tubs I found in Ikea.

Under stairs cupboard: the only decent sized cupboard in the whole house, everything else lives in there. I've tried to organise things into trolleys/storage boxes too, making it easy for them to find things, and more importantly for it all to be easily packed away.

Clothes

Finding homes for all our clothes is another constant struggle - I’ve switched things round so many times over the years! But I’m currently storing our clothes in three main ways:

A double height wardrobe in the master bedroom - luckily this was here when we moved in and is a lifesaver. I gave it a makeover a couple of years ago, and its still going strong.

A large chest of drawers in little ladies room holds almost everything else. I’ve used drawer dividers to squeeze as much as possible into each drawer. A smaller chest of drawers lives in the nursery for little man’s things.

Again here, regular decluttering is the key - I probably take ten minutes once a month to clear out and donate anything we’ve grown out of or are not using.

Junk drawer

Everyone has a junk drawer don’t they - ours was overflowing with so much random stuff so it was high time for a sort out.

I found these drawer dividers on Amazon, and they’re perfect for organising things into sections so you can quickly and easily find what you’re looking for. No more wasting time searching for the sellotape!

Even better, they came in a set of 14, meaning there was some more leftover to organise my bedside drawer too.

How do you store everyday things in your home?
