Weekend Mini-Makes: DIY Marble Tray

DIY marble effect tray made from a tile sample and brass handles. How to transform a tile sample into an expensive looking tray using spray paint and a single floor tile. Perfect decorative tray for your kitchen, bathroom or dressing table to display jewellery, make up or beauty essentials. Quick crafting DIY tutorial you can complete in a couple of hours.

I'm back with another Weekend Mini-Make today: a quick craft you can complete over the weekend for less than a tenner. And even better than that, all my mini-makes are designed to be something beginners can try their hand at, whilst also being a relaxing, well-being boost. As I've mentioned before, I regularly turn to DIY and crafting when times get hard, so for me, having a creative outlet has become a vital part of my everyday life. I hope that these simple, cheap crafting ideas will inspire others to have a go, and see if it can make big changes in their life too.

This week I’ve been at the tile samples again. I put together a plant pot from some samples last week, and couldn’t resist having a go with another tile I spotted while researching last weeks project. So I bought myself a sample of a stunning hexagonal marble floor tile from Walls & Floors for just £2, and decided to make a decorative tray out of it.

Tip: This tray is for decorative purposes only - I wouldn’t recommend carrying anything heavy on it using the handles. However if you did want to use it properly, be sure to screw the handles in rather than gluing them.

Total spend: £8.94

You will need:
Tile sample - You can pick tile samples up for free from a lot of retailers, however I paid £2 for this one from Walls & Floors as I wanted something a bit bigger
Handles - I got these 64mm T-bar ones from Homebase for £3.47 each
Spray paint primer - I had all the paint I've used here leftover from previous projects
Spray paint
Gold paint
Frog tape
Felt pads - I found mine for 75p in Homebase

Firstly, I spray painted the handles as I wanted to go for the brass look. I started by applying a coat of printer and then a layer of gold metallic spray paint over the top. Don't be tempted to skip the primer stage - you'll need this to make sure your colour sticks to the metal properly.

While the handles were drying I then applied some gold paint to the edges of the tile to give a more expensive-looking finish. Use frog tape to ensure you get a sharp line, and two coats will give you a more vibrant colour.

Once its all dried, remove the frog tape and you should have a beautiful gold trim. Much better than the boring tile edge anyway! Next, pop some felt pads on the underside of the tile to avoid it scratching any surfaces you place it on (do this before attaching the handles - definitely didn't think to do that before it was too late...)

Finally, attach the handles to the tile using strong glue such as superglue, or as I used No More Nails. Don’t use too much to avoid the glue spilling out from under the handles, and hold in place for around 30 seconds until its secure.

And there you have it: an expensive looking marble-effect tray for a fraction of the price. Style with some of your beauty bits in the bathroom or a dressing room, a vase of flowers in the kitchen, or even to hold nibbles at a party.
