DIY boho style wall hanging made from wool or yarn. Perfect for a nursery or bedroom, this step-by-step tutorial will show you how to make a large feature decoration on a tight budget. Using a stick from the garden, and pink and yellow wool tassels. Nursery decor inspiration you can make yourself in this crafting tutorial.

Its Friday, which means its time for another Weekend Mini-Make: a quick craft you can complete over the weekend for less than a tenner. And even better than that, all my mini-makes are designed to be something beginners can try their hand at, whilst also being a relaxing, well-being boost. As I've mentioned before, I regularly turn to DIY and crafting when times get hard, so for me, having a creative outlet has become a vital part of my everyday life. I hope that these simple, cheap crafting ideas will inspire others to have a go, and see if it can make big changes in their life too.

This week I've been working on a little something to finish off little ladies new big girls room. I've been having a revamp in the nursery for months now, but think this has finally finished it off - a boho style wall hanging made from tassels. I've made a couple of bits for her new room now, but I think this is my favourite so far. Not least because it cost me a grand total of £0 to make! All the crafty bits I had leftover from previous DIYs, and I found the twig in my garden. So the perfect no-spend craft for when you're stuck indoors too!

You will need:

Stick - I've used one I found lying in my garden, mine measures 75cm long.

Wool - Again these are balls of wool I had leftover from a previous make - my DIY rainbow wall hanging which is also in the nursery, so glad the colours match up throughout the room

Wooden beads - A nice addition if you've got something like this you can use, however not essential at all. I had these leftover from a previous make.

Cardboard - To make the tassel. Choose a piece thats the length you want your tassel to be, so a small piece will create a small tassel. I went with a piece that was 15cm long.

Scissors

Long embroidery needle - Only needed if you're threading the wooden beads on though

Total spend: £0

How to make:

First off you need to find a stick. Perhaps have a hunt around your garden, or while out on a walk? When you're hunting for a twig to use, be on the lookout for something fairly sturdy to hold the weight of the tassels, and with some natural features too to add interest. So for example, the one I chose has an uneven texture and off shoots rather than being a simple straight stick. You could obviously also use a wooden dowel though, its totally up to you.

Work out how many tassels you'd like your hanging to have, as well as which colours you'll use and in what order. I've gone with 13 tassels in simple mustard and pink colours to tie the theme together in her room, however you could use as many, or as few colours as you wish. For example, how nice would a rainbow coloured version of this be?!

Once you've decided on your colours its time to make the tassels. These are so easy to make, and don't use up as much wool as you'd think. In total I used about half a ball of wool for each colour.

When you tie the tassel together, leave the piece of wool at the top long - I've gone with 30cm, however the longer the better as it'll give you more room to play with in the arranging stage.

I've also popped a couple wooden beads to the thread coming out of the top of the tassel. You might want to do this using a long embroidery needle, as I found it difficult to push the thread through the bead. At this point I would usually trim the ends of the tassel to make them nice and neat, however I left this until right at the very end in order to make sure I didn't trim any shorter than others.

Once you've made all your tassels its time to start arranging them! I'll be honest, I found this the hardest bit, probably as I wanted them to hang in a triangle shape. After faffing about for a while I realised the best way to do this would be whilst the hanging was in situ on the wall! Pop the stick up on the wall first, and then tie the tassels to it.

I've attached my stick to the wall using along two tiny nails for it to sit on, however you could also tie another piece of wool to hang it from that too.

Once your stick is in position, tie the tassels to it at varying lengths, in whichever style you prefer - in a straight line would actually be easier to do I think! I tripled knotted all the tassels to make sure they didn't slip off.

Finally, I trimmed the wool of each tassel to tidy up the lengths a bit. And thats it - you're all done! A really easy and budget way of creating a large feature in any room.

Hope you enjoyed this quick and simple DIY - let me know if you make one, I'd love to see! And I'll be back next week with another quick relaxing, craft perfect for completing over the weekend.

Sam Xx
