When you’re planning to decorate a room, it can be difficult to know where to start. Got a blank room in your house which you're not sure what to do with? Using wallpaper can be a really simple solution, but one that can often make a huge impact. It can add some colour and pattern to any space, and has always been one of my go-to ideas when designing a room.

Not sure where to start though? Keep reading for five ways to use wallpaper to transform any room...

Create a feature wall

The best place to start when thinking about wallpaper, and can have a big impact on any space. If you're going for a bold and busy wallpaper, then using it on all four walls can often make a room seem smaller, so choose just one wall, or the chimney breast for example, as a feature.

Not sure what style to go for? Choose shades that tie in with the rest of your room, and pick out colours from the pattern when choosing your accessories and soft furnishings. The boldness of the Wild Flowers wallpaper from I Love Wallpaper, works so well with the painted wardrobes – the perfect contrast between soft and bold.

Upcycle a piece of furniture

Stuck with a piece of furniture that's seen better days, or just needs a bit of a facelift? Using wallpaper to give it a refresh can have a big impact. Stick inside of the furniture for a pop of colour, or you could even cover the outside. This is the Bumble Bee wallpaper in Sage Green, and works perfectly inside my dark dresser.

Paper just half the wall

If you've got some panelling or a dado rail in your home, then using wallpaper to cover the bottom or top half is a great way to add a feature without committing to covering the whole wall. If you’re worried about the light you get in a room, or a pattern making a space feel too “busy” this can be the perfect solution, as you can add some colour and personality without losing the lightness on your walls.

If you've gone for a paler tone on your panelling, then a bolder shade wallpaper would work really well and add some different texture to the space. The beautiful Terracotta shade of the Pablo wallpaper, again from I Love Wallpaper makes the perfect contrast to the paler toned panelling in this room.

I also love the way the light pink tones of this Monstera Leaf Wallpaper work with the green walls.

Give your storage a revamp

If you're anything like me, you'll need lots of storage all over your home. I've got toys, books and pretty much most of our stuff stored away in boxes all over the place. One way of making these look a bit nicer, is to cover your boxes in wallpaper offcuts – this is the Monstera Leaf Wallpaper again - a really quick and easy way of giving everything a better look, and tying them in with the theme in a room. You can even do this with items such as folders stored in your home office.

Spruce up your bathroom

Finally, wallpaper doesn't have to be contained to the living room or bedroom. It can look really effective in a bathroom, or even a kitchen. I've got panelling in our downstairs cloakroom, painted white it gives the perfect backdrop for a beautiful patterned paper above it, such as the Bumble Bee wallpaper in Sage Green. This space is very small, and with no window its always very dimly lit in here, so I love that this option keeps the lightness of the white whilst adding some pattern too.

Frame offcuts as art

Looking to update your artwork? Or even create a gallery wall? Framing a wallpaper off-cut can be a budget-friendly way of adding some colour or pattern to a space. This is also a good way of using a bold wallpaper without committing to covering the whole wall.

Have you used wallpaper in your home? Is it something you’re thinking of doing soon?
