Budget bedroom makeover: Where everything's from

I've recently finished a mini-refresh in my bedroom, something which has been a long time coming - we've not touched it since redecorating when moving in seven years ago! Its something I've wanted to do for ages, but had to be done on a super tight budget, so I'm really pleased with what I've managed to achieve in here. Keep reading for lots of photos and all the details.

Before - totally fit for purpose, but in need of a little sprucing up:

This is the mood board I put together for this room when in the planning stages - with the exception of going for different bedside tables, I've not strayed too far from it have I!

Panelling and paint
I knew I wanted to remove the wallpaper and install some panelling, which is one of the most budget-friendly ways of making a big impact. Exactly how I did it is on this post here, but I bought the mdf pre-cut online for just £28! I then primed and painted the panelling in Craig & Rose 'Moonstone Grey', which I got colour matched by Decorating Centre Online to save some more money. The rest of the walls in this room are painted in my favourite off-white, 'White Chiffon' by Dulux, again colour matched as this shade is actually discontinued now.

New furniture
I knew we couldn't stretch to a new bed, but I actually still do like this one all these years on, so I decided to just change the bedside tables. Our current Ikea ones were again seven years old, and looking really worse for wear, so I swapped them for some budget replacements - these wooden ones which were on offer for £45 each from Jysk.com.

Soft furnishings
Adding new accessories can make a huge difference to any room, and in here I've gone with a new duvet cover from IKEA, pillowcases from LaRedoute to add a floral touch, and a throw from H&M. I've also swapped our cushion covers for new ones, again from H&M.

Accessories
I've then added a couple of prints (both from Desenio in IKEA frames) on top of the panelling, which has a small ledge on top. I've actually hung these on the wall using nails in the normal way I hang artwork, rather than prop them up on the ledge as I was worried they might fall off and hit my husband on the need in the middle of the night...

The bits on the bedside tables are all things I've moved from other rooms into here, the gold photo frame was Zara last year, donut vase is H&M, and small faux plant on top of the panelling is IKEA.

Lighting
Finally, the change which I think made the biggest impact - new lights. We'd previously had a very shabby looking chandelier in here (left by previous owners) since we moved in, and its always been on my list of things to replace. I swapped it for this really pretty light which was just £50 from Matalan earlier this year, and is unfortunately now sold out.

I then wanted to add some pendant lights to fill the space a bit, and add a feature either side of the bed. I couldn't stretch to expensive rewiring, so have used a really simple and cost-effective solution: hanging pendant lightshades and using battery powered LED lights.

I picked up the lights from Amazon, which are £14 for a pack of three, and stuck them into these IKEA shades using the sticky pads that come with them. I then hung the shades using twine attached to a small hook screwed into the ceiling. The lights come with a remote control, so its a really simple solution to installing eye-catching lighting without the expensive price tag.

Next up in here is some new carpet, and possibly a new blind/curtains, but other than that I'm quite happy with this little makeover!

What do you think - definitely an improvement, right?

Sam Xx
