It's that time of year again, when all thoughts turn to Christmas and how to decorate your home for the festive season. While its too early for me to put the tree up, I love thinking about beautiful tablescapes, and how to decorate the dining table for our Christmas Day lunch.
But there's no need to spend a fortune either - you can keep things simple and still make an impact on the big day.
All you need is some basic fabric napkins and some pretty ribbons, and you can create a simple yet effective table setting. And the best part is some of these designs would work well at other occasions all year round - all you'd need to do is use different ribbons and fabrics.
Here's three easy ways to fold your napkins and add a bit of fun to your table this Christmas
You will need
Whichever style you go for, you'll only need the following two items to recreate the look
Napkins - I've used some simple square cotton napkins I picked up for a couple of pounds in Dunelm. Mine are 36cm x 36cm in size.
Ribbon - Mine is a simple thin black velvet ribbon
Napkin idea 1: Bow
So simple yet effective - this is one of my favourites
How to fold your napkin into a bow:
1. Fold the napkin in half corner to corner to create a large triangle
2. Fold the point over and over on itself until you've got a long, thin band of napkin
3. Bend each end towards the centre. Make sure they're sitting at an angle so they're crossed over
4. Flip the napkin over and arrange the two ends into a bow shape
5/6. Wrap a small length of ribbon around the centre of your 'bow' and tie at the back
Napkin idea 2: Christmas tree
A festive favourite - always takes me a few attempts to get just right to start with, however once you get the hang of this one there's nothing to it!
How to fold your napkin into a Christmas tree:
1. Start by folding your square napkin in half both widthways and then top to bottom to create a smaller square
2. Turn your square on its side so the corner is at the top and fold each layer over on top of the next
3. You'll end up with each corner showing to create the pattern shown
4/5. Turn your napkin over so the folded layers are face down. Then fold the left and right side in slightly to create a triangle shape
6. Spin your napkin around 180 degrees and start to fold the pointed edges under on themselves. This will create the 'tree' shape. This might take a few attempts to get the shape, however I promise once you've got the hang of it it's a very simple process!
7/8. To finish off I tied some ribbon into a small bow and placed this on the top of the 'tree'
Napkin idea 3: Cutlery holder
My go-to when time is short, this is probably the quickest, easiest way of folding napkins ever. Would work really well with different coloured napkins and ribbon for any occasion too.
How to fold your napkin to hold cutlery:
1. Start by folding your square napkin in half width ways
2. Fold widthways again so you've got a long and thin napkin
3. Fold in half top to bottom and tie ribbon around middle to create a bow
Finish by simply slipping your cutlery on top of the napkin and underneath the bow - so easy, right?!
Which look is your favourite?
