I've been decluttering one space a week in our home in an attempt to get on top of the clutter that leaves me feeling overwhelmed.
We live in a small house with little storage, so with two small children things very quickly become cluttered. I've got lots of helpful organisational systems in place, and try to prioritise storage solutions in every room, however things still get cluttered quite regularly. Stuff everywhere makes me feel like I can't think straight, so I try to keep on top of the clutter.
I've learnt a few things from doing this, which will help with how I tackle clutter in my home going forward.
So here's everything I've learnt so far...
Tackling one space a week is much less overwhelming than decluttering a whole house. Breaking it up into small chunks like this has been much more effective as I'm more likely to stick to doing it regularly.
An organisational system doesn't have to take forever to set up though. It could simply be dividers to keep your drawers tidy, jars to hold your dried food inside your cupboards, or getting into the habit of putting things you no longer need straight into a donate bag.
I've also previously shared lots of ideas for daily habits you can adopt that can help keep on top of the clutter, and find these really help.
I often find it hard to get rid of lots of things for sentimental reasons, and thats OK. Try to only keep the things you really love, and give them their own dedicated space within your home. Using specific storage solutions such as a memory box to hold things like this can work really well.
I buy far too many duplicates. Just because I love a top I don't need to buy it in every colour way. When dealing with multiples, set a reasonable number, for example one set of cutlery, or ten pairs of socks, and get rid of the rest.
A clear space (and therefore a clear mind!) is more valuable than 'stuff'. I try hard to remember this when getting distracted by pretty things in the shops...
You'll never be finished with decluttering. Setting up systems and using storage solutions that work can help you keep on top of it everyday though. I've previously shared some of my favourite storage solutions that work best in our home.
I hope this is helpful to anyone else struggling with stuff everywhere. Do you have any tips for keeping on top of the clutter?
Thanks for reading,
Sam Xx
