How to paint DIY stripes: Step-by-step tutorial

I've recently made over our cluttered under stairs cupboard, transforming it from a dumping ground of kids toys into a magical reading nook - complete with DIY hand painted stripes. I've been wanting to add stripes to somewhere in our home for a while now, but was put off as it looked tricky.

However, I've been pleasantly surprised that it actually took me only an afternoon to complete. So here's some simple instructions for adding this magical look to any space.

You will need:

Paint - I used three shades; Rich Red, Blue Horizon and Yellow Diamond all by Johnstone's Paint

Angled paintbrush - I used an up cycling brush, however you could simply trim any paintbrush to create the same look

Frog tape - I used an entire roll of the tape measuring 36mm in our small 1m x 1.5m space

Step 1

To start with make sure your walls are in great condition. I needed to touch up the walls with our undercoat, and I filled some holes too

Step 2

Once your wall is ready to go, you can start to tape up your stripes.

Use offcuts of tape to measure out your stripes - this is the easiest way to make sure your stripes are even, without the need for an expensive laser level or lots of time consuming measuring.

Step 3

Time to paint: I used two coats of paint, however this will depend on your shade. Don't forget to pull your tape off whilst your second coat is still damp to prevent chipping.

Step 4

Once fully dry, I added a yellow ceiling with a cute wave above the door, and hand-painted some flowers for a pop of colour.

It's as easy as that! What do you think to this simple (but I think effective!) makeover?
