Interior trends for 2021 you can embrace in your home (on a budget!)

Interior trends for 2021 you can adapt in your home on a budget. Mood board high street picks, and DIY projects you can do to recreate trends at home

Every year interior trends come and go, and while, like me, you might want to keep up to date as much with them, it can be hard to work them into the design of your home without regularly renovating and spending a fortune.

So here's some budget-friendly ways you can adapt 2021's big trends into your home, including my pick of items available on the high street, and some ideas for DIY-ing your own on-trend decor.

Interior trend 1: Arches & curves

A huge trend in 2020 that doesn't show any signs of disappearing this year - think curves and arches. These can easily be introduced to your home through furniture and accessories, and even paintwork.

Clockwise from top left: Candlestick, H&M / Print, Desenio, from £6.71 / Arch wall mirror, Dunelm, £50 / Print, Nest.co.uk, £26 / Gold mirror, Habitat, £25 / Pink scalloped dish, Other Letters, £10 / TV stand, Habitat, £65 / Vase, H&M / Vase, George Home, £10

Budget DIY idea: Colour blocking
Probably the easiest and cheapest way of incorporating these shapes into your home is to simply paint one. I added a colour-block arch into my home office last year, and its a great way of sectioning off areas and adding interest to a blank wall it corner. Incorporate similarly rounded accessories, such as a mirror or shelving, into the space, or onto the wall to compliment the look.

Interior trend 2: Earthy/tonal colours

Dulux's Colour of the Year 2021 is Brave Ground, a beige shade, has set the tone for a resurgence in neutrals with earthy tones and light shades everywhere at the moment. Worried about everything looking too washed out? Ground the colour scheme with darker shades such as black through your accessories, photo frames and woodwork, for example.

Clockwise from top left: ANNALOUISA curtains, IKEA, £25 / Glass sand timer, Primark, £6 / RODELUND rug, £75 / Amber glass lamp, George Home, £20 / GURLI cushion, IKEA, £1.75 / Set of 4 mugs, Habitat, £24 / KROKHOLMEN coffee table, IKEA, £35 / Cushion, George Home, £8 / Paint, Brave Ground by Dulux / Teacup & saucer, George Home, £6 / ODDRUN throw, £10, IKEA / Wooden candle, B&M, £5 / SANELA cushion cover, IKEA, £5

Budget DIY ideas: Upcycling
No need to replace all your furniture to keep up with ever-changing trends - upcycle current pieces that you’re no longer in love with by painting them a light neutral coloured shade. You can find a beginners guide to upcycling here. Or you could simply refresh your walls with a shade like Brave Ground, of course.

Interior trend 3: Boucle
The perfect compliment for those earthy tones - this cosy, fluffy material is making a comeback in both accessories and furniture form. Adding a warmth to a space, this style can finish off a light coloured scheme beautifully. Choose a throw, cushion covers or even an occasional chair to introduce some of this soft texture to a room without it being too overpowering.

Clockwise from top left: Set of two white cushions, Made.com, £45 / Bed frame, Made.com, £649 / Boucle armchair, Cult Furniture, £249 / Throw, Amara, £89 / Mustard cushion cover, Zara Home, £11.99

Budget DIY idea: Re-upholster
I recently re-upholstered an armchair using some boucle-style fabric to update it and create an interesting addition to our hallway - a really budget-friendly way of incorporating some of this texture into our home. And even better than that, my method was completely no-sew too! Alternatively you could make a new cushion cover from boucle fabric.

Interior trend 4: Green
Neutral, earthy tones not your thing? A bolder alternative is also set to be everywhere in 2021. Particularly seen in soft furnishings and decor, green is the colour to be seen this year.

Clockwise from top left: Velvet cushion, Homesense, £14.99 / Sofa, Habitat, £595 / Bubble glass jug, Habitat, £12 / Chair, Cult Furniture, £109 / Bath mat, Matalan, £10 / Chair, Cult Furniture, £119 / Cushion, £12, Homesense / Glass storage pot, Oliver Bonas, £16 / Glass vase, Matalan, £18

Budget DIY idea: Swap out cushion covers
Not keen on going dark on your walls? Add green through accessories such as replacing your cushion covers, which can always be swapped out when/if your tastes change. I do this a lot in my home - I feel that it switches things up, and helps my living room look fresher without replacing furniture or repainting.

Interior trend 5: Wicker/cane/bamboo
Another of the biggest trends of 2020 is set to continue to be a big deal in 2021, with materials such as cane, wicker and bamboo absolutely everywhere, from shelves to furniture and even vases. The perfect addition to a scandi/boho-themed room, too.

Budget DIY idea: Hack a piece of furniture
Why not update a piece of furniture such as a radiator cover or set of drawers using cane webbing to give it an refreshed and on-trend feel? Alice from @renovating_parkhouse over on Instagram recently hacked an IKEA TV stand to incorporate two of 2021's biggest trends - cane webbing and green. How stylish does it look?! Such an amazing transformation without spending a fortune on replacing your furniture.

Interior trend 6: Dried flowers

Probably the trend I'm currently most obsessed with, I've got a few bouquets of dried flowers and pampas grass dotted over the place now, and I love the texture and colour they add to a room. You can pick these up really cheaply too, particularly if you know somewhere grasses like this grow locally. I’ve also found some artificial versions below, which will obviously last longer.

Budget DIY idea: Create a feature from dried flowers
Use some real pampas or dried grasses such as bunny tails to make a wreath which will add some texture to a blank wall, or bridge that gap on your front door between Christmas and Easter!

Interior trend 7: Abstract line drawings
Another trend of 2020 that shows no signs of slowing down - expect to see line drawings and abstract faces all over the place this year too, from artwork to rugs, cushions to vases. Not only is this design a really great way of adding character, their chic and monochrome simplicity will compliment any theme.

Budget DIY idea: Add a face to your decor
I added an abstract line face to both a cushion cover and a plant pot (made from household rubbish) last year - and its a simple and really budget-friendly way of adopting this trend into your home without buying anything new.

Interior trend 8: Reeded & fluted textures

A really simple way of adding some texture to your home, reeded and fluted items (think with a lined or ribbed feel) are popping up all over the place. Originating in glassware, this trend has spread into accessories and even soft furnishings. I've even seen a new twist on the ever-popular wall panelling trend which features wooden slats rather than in a more traditional style as were used to seeing, giving a space a really modern and fresh ‘reeded’ look.

Budget DIY idea: Replace panels of a unit with reeded glass
Again, upcycling is my go-to! Abi Hugo from thewhitethistle.com (@thewhitethistle over on Instagram) has recently installed modern style panelling in her living room, and how great does it look in that corner?! Adding interest as well as warmth through that beautiful raw wood colour. If you want to start small though, you could definitely have a go at adding a reeded texture to something smaller such as a side table or radiator cover using wooden slats.

Which of these trends will you be adding to your home in 2021?

Thanks for reading,
Sam Xx
