Don’t have the budget to redecorate? I promise you can make big changes using accessories only. I've written lots about this in the past, but Dove Cottage isn't our forever home, and we'd absolutely love to move on at some point in the future. However, although there’s no budget for renovating this house, doesn’t mean big changes can’t be made through accessories only.
Refreshing a room through decor is one of the biggest ways you can make an impact to a room. Not sure where to start? Here’s my five go-to items to update any space.
Add a large mirror
Adding a mirror to a space is one of my favourite ways of refreshing a space, I’ve got at least one feature mirror in every room. Positioned well, it will bounce light around a space, making it look bigger and brighter - something our small, dingy kitchen was crying out for.
Our kitchen has been on quite a journey over the past couple of years - you can read about all the DIY’s I’ve taken on here - so after spending so long on DIYing, painting and upcycling, getting the accessories right was the final important step.
We’ve not got a lot of space, so items in here all need to be carefully chosen, so as not to make the place feel cluttered. In order to combat this, placing a large mirror on the back wall has made the room look so much bigger, and has created a feature out of this awkward corner. Oak Furnitureland's Payton wall mirror is so much bigger than I thought it would be, and has already transformed this space. I'm thinking I might add some wall lights either side of the mirror to finish this corner off and balance it out a bit.
Lighting
Adding soft lighting can work wonders in any room, by brightening up dark corners, or creating atmosphere. Our neutral living room can often feel cold, particularly on a winters evening, so adding the Belmond table lamp from Oak Furnitureland has created a cosy feel, and worked to shed some light on the shadows in here.
Not only that, but the lamp's rope base adds warmth and texture to this corner, which can often feel cold. Isn't it the perfect addition to my Autumnal-themed console?
Rug
Another quick, easy way of transforming a room is to add a rug. Not only will you inject texture and warmth, you can hide ugly floors, and create different zones. You can even layer up rugs for a real statement.
The simple rule when choosing a rug is to go for as big as you can afford, and place under your furniture to draw the eye outwards and make a space look bigger.
Our conservatory doubles up as a dining space and playroom (yes its working extra hard!), so by adding the Oak Furnitureland Knole handwoven rug under the table, I can zone off the dining space and tie in the black tones in the dresser. The rug feels lovely underfoot too, soft but sturdy - definitely needed with all the mess that's made during teatime in our house!
Artwork
If you’re faced with blank walls, adding some artwork through prints can inject colour and character to any space. I've got a few different gallery walls across my home, from a collection of colourful prints, to a structured gallery of photos on my stairs, there's lots of ways you can use artwork to transform a space. Choose complimentary colours and frames to link your gallery together.
Can't put things up on your walls? Use shelves to prop up prints instead.
Soft furnishings
Finally another simple way to refresh a room is adding soft furnishings. Add a throw and some cushions in a complimentary colour to soften up an area. Adding small accessories like stoneware vases and dried flowers can add some additional texture and interest.
